Well… you read the title! Yes, I’ve added another dance form (yes, it’s a form of dance for those who don’t know, in particular, a form of contemporary dance). In fact, I hadn’t heard, scratch that… I don’t remember looking into it like I did the Release-based technique, the Cunningham technique and the Graham technique, which I believe are the more popular forms of contemporary dance (at least, more widely offered when a teacher says they offer contemporary dance).
There is also Limon, which I watched a video of someone performing using that technique, and I think it’s beautiful.
But Horton technique… as they say in the UK…
“It’s right up my street!”
I love the lines, the movement through space. It’s so different to ballet, but in a way, it reminds me of it too, unlike the Release-based technique. Maybe it’s the gracefulness, strength, and flexibility.
I actually did my first class (online) on the 25th April this year (sorry, I’ve been keeping things from you!). It was good, but I remember thinking, ” Arggh, I’ll be doing 1.5 hours of Horton technique followed by a 1.5 hour break, then a 1.5 hour ballet class!” But I have to remember, I managed to dance four hours every Saturday for twelve weeks!
One con with the Zoom class was that, by the end, when it came to the ‘sequence’, I found it hard to mirror the teacher. I was spinning the wrong way, which meant the next move was messed up, and the whole thing was ruined. I actually gave up. But I do believe that if I continue, I’ll get used to the type of movements required, and this won’t be an issue. It was my first class, and I believe I did ok!
I planned to do another class just this past weekend, but I’m recovering from a cold. I actually thought, ” Let me just book it and watch,” but I overslept and missed the booking deadline. Oh well.
I plan to book a class for this coming Saturday (the day before my birthday, for those of you who want to send gifts, haha!). I didn’t plan on continuing, but here we are, so I’ll let you know how my second class goes.
Oh! I found a company called M-Intensive. They offer teacher training in the Horton technique, as well as memberships for those who would like to learn. They have hundreds of online videos, and with the membership I plan to subscribe to, I’ll get a one-hour live class per week (during term times only). I plan on joining this coming September. But let me fall in love with it first, with the online Saturday classes from Danceworks!
